Ingredient highlight: Pea protein - Gingerful

Ingredient highlight: Pea protein

You may only think to put peas on your dinner plate, but here's a secret: this plant-powered protein is quietly becoming a hero ingredient in haircare, and is particularly useful when it comes to caring for red hair.

They may be small in size, but this mighty superfood (read: super-hair-food) is a hardworking powerhouse in adding extra strength, moisture and shine. That’s exactly why we included it in our Henna, Rose & Sweet Orange leave-in conditioner formula.

WHY IS PEA PROTEIN GOOD FOR RED HAIR?

When looking at your red hair's overall health and the products you use on it, you must first understand that a large part of its strength, shine, moisture and softness is down to a steady balance of moisture vs protein. When the balance is off, it can be dry, rough and frizzy (needs moisture), or limp and fluffy (needs protein) – it's important to maintain a balance to keep your hair looking its best.

Strengthens from the inside out

Pea protein is rich in amino acids, known as the building blocks that help support and fortify strands. These amino acids can help strengthen the hair’s structure, making it more resilient to breakage from brushing, styling or environmental damage.

Hydrates without heaviness

Unlike heavier oils that weigh hair down, pea protein is very clever at binding moisture to the hair shaft to retain softness and flexibility. Because it's so lightweight, this makes it a great option for using in a daily conditioner, leaving hair silky and soft without a greasy build-up.

Smooths, protects and adds shine

Thanks to its film-forming properties, pea protein creates a light, protective layer around each strand that helps reduce frizz, smooth cuticles and boost hair’s natural sebum levels – that's the lovely multi-tonal gloss you see on healthy red hair.

Plant-based and vegan

While many high street products include keratin as their protein builder (derived from animals), a huge benefit of using pea protein is from it being plant-derived.

Natural red hair can be especially prone to dryness and brittleness due to its unique structure. That’s where pea protein truly shines (and gives back shine to red hair). It helps lock in moisture, reduce frizz, and support stronger, smoother strands every time you use your leave-in conditioner.

Our Henna, Rose & Sweet Orange leave-in conditioner for redheads is designed for both natural or dyed red hair, and can be used on either wet or dry hair – both to seal in moisture from wash to wash, but also to refresh in between. The bonus ingredient of henna sets it apart from other leave-ins, as it helps to boost red tones and maintain that multi-tonal ginger shine we all crave.
