The power of coconut oil in winter haircare and skincare

The power of coconut oil in winter haircare and skincare

Snow flurries, brisk winds, central heating and chilly drafts – with winter weather comes increased dryness for your hair and skin. This is particularly bad news for redheads, who are more likely to have sensitive and dry skin and hair.

Adjusting your beauty routine during winter is an effective way to combat the harshness caused by the season.

And, with our penchant for natural ingredients, is it any surprise that we favour the multifunctional ingredient that is coconut oil during colder months? It is an incredibly versatile product that can hugely benefit your hair and skin. (It can even be used as a cleaning product – who knew?!)

Here's why coconut oil is at the top of our list (and our wash bag) in winter:

Skin benefits of using coconut oil

Body and face moisturiser

Coconut oil is packed with vitamins and fatty acids that help to lock in moisture, soothing and preventing dryness and flakiness. It's particularly great for cracked heels or significantly dry parts of your body.

Apply thinly for a yummy-scented moisture boost.

Pre/post shaving balm

Your skin stays protected and soothed during and after shaving. Honest, it works!

Make-up remover

A small amount of coconut oil can melt away make-up residue – yes, even waterproof mascara!

Sun burn relief

Due to its intensely moisturising benefits, coconut oil can provide some relief and hydration from sun burn.

Lip balm

Moisturises dry lips while also giving a subtle, glossy sheen.

Highlighter make-up

Just a couple of dots give gorgeous natural-looking highlights to your make-up look.

Hair benefits of using coconut oil

Deeply conditioning and protecting

It's no surprise we use coconut oil in both our Henna & Rose conditioner and hair mask. It penetrates deep into the hair shaft, providing intense hydration and moisture. The ingredient's naturally-occurring fatty acids work hard to prevent protein loss that often happens during washing, helping to leave the hair soft, strong and shiny.

Taming frizz and dry ends

Frizz and dry ends are extremely common in winter, so use a tiny amount of coconut oil to control flyaways and add a bit of moisture to any dryness.

Scalp treatment

As the ingredient is deeply nourishing, any dryness on your scalp can be alleviated with a gentle scalp massage using coconut oil. Leave to sit on your hair for around 20 minutes, then wash out with a sulfate-free shampoo.

Coconut oil is a solid below around 24 °C (75 °F), at which point it starts to melt. This makes it ideal for carrying on the go during the colder months. Simply take a small amount and melt in the palm of your hand before applying. A little goes a long way!
